Chapter 18

Maya

When Rufus said that I would have to seduce the heir apparent to the Whitlock dynasty, he never once mentioned that I had my work cut out for me. Every man who is in attendance at this sham of a ball can’t take their eyes off me, while Alexi doesn’t so much as spare me a second glance.

It’s infuriating to say the least.

Here I am, dressed in the finest silk, my hair pulled up with so many pins, my scalp is literally burning, while my face is covered up under so much make-up, I didn’t even recognize my reflection in the mirror when my handmaidens were through with me.

And all this effort for a man who hasn’t so much as said two words to me all night.

“Princess Anika, will you humble me with a dance?” Lord what-his-face asks, sensing I’ve droned out through most of his boresome conversation, while I fester my hatred for the true guest of honor.

I’m about to open my mouth and tell him that my feet are bleeding from being shoved into the cruel contraption that are these horrendous high heels, when Rufus swings in and answers on my behalf.

“I’m afraid another lord has already beckoned to have Princess Anika’s first dance, Lord Chalmette. But I’m sure before the night is through, our fair princess would be honored to dance with you.”

Fat chance that’s going to happen, I think to myself, but keep my fake smile plastered to my lips just the same or risk another one of Rufus’s lectures on proper lady etiquette.

“Oh, I’m sure I can dissuade which ever lord here that has staked his claim on the first dance to reconsider and give me the illustrious honor,” the pompous peacock of a man retorts amusingly.

“If it was anyone else, I would agree with you, my lord,” Rufus replies nonchalantly. “But Prince Alexi isn’t known for being charitable.”

Chalmette’s expression pales at the mention of the dark prince, immediately reconsidering his offer to dance.

I, on the other hand, am suddenly in a dancing mood.

“Oh, Rufus,” I sing song in such a melodic tone that my chief in arms instantly hikes up a suspicious brow, knowing something is a foot. “I’m sure the Prince won’t object to one little dance. I’m mean, look at him,” I point to the man of the hour. “He looks far more interested in talking politics with the other lords than he seems to be in dancing with little old me. Come, Lord Chalmette. I would be honored to dance with you.”

I watch the beady eyed man hesitate, his gaze bouncing off of me and the prince, wondering if a dance is worth the price of his life.

Coward.

Refusing to give him any time to turn me down, I clap over to the musicians and order them to play a danceable song, while I place my hand in the cowardly lord’s hand and tug him to the dancefloor. Reluctantly, he follows suit, and puts on a hesitant smile, while doing everything in his power not to look in the prince’s direction.
